How Far is a Day Trip?

This can depend on the person and how far you are willing to drive in a single day. However, most people consider a day trip to be no further than a 3-hour drive one way. Many of these ideas are 2 hours or less from Tampa. I have also included some ideas that are 2.5 to 3 hours from Tampa, if I felt they were worth the extra driving time.

How to Plan a Day Trip

There are a few steps to set you up for success when planning the perfect day trip. See below for a step-by-step approach.

  1. Decide how far you are willing to drive
  2. Consider what type of activity you would like to do
  3. Choose your destination
  4. Select your date
  5. Research the area and plan your activities
  6. Purchase any tickets or passes you need in advance
  7. In the days prior to your trip, check the weather
  8. Pack any food, drinks, or other items you will need
  9. Hit the road and enjoy your day!

Tips for Planning a Day Trip

If you’ve never planned a day trip before there are a few things you want to consider. Below are 6 tips for a successful day trip.

1. Start Small

If you’ve never planned a day trip before consider picking a location no more than 1.5 hours away. I always find that the drive to get to my destination goes by relatively quickly, but the drive back home can sometimes be difficult. There is usually more traffic later in the day and you are usually tired from the days activity. To avoid feeling overwhelmed by the drive back home, choose a location with 1.5 hours to start. Once you get used to taking day trips you can start venturing further away!

2. Pack a Cooler

I recommend packing a small cooler with plenty of water and any other beverages you might want throughout the day. This allows you to easily grab a drink while on the road on in between destinations without having to stop and buy it at a convenience store. If I am going to be doing a lot of hiking, I will usually throw an extra gallon of water in my car to refill my water bottles as needed throughout the day.

3. Pack Snacks

When I am going on a day trip I like to stop as few times as possible. I like to keep some easy to grab snacks within reach in the car in case you get hungry. Depending on your destination, you may even want to pack a picnic lunch to enjoy during the day. For some easy to grab snacks check out my favorite hiking snacks which can also work great on a day trip.

4. Bring a Change of Clothes

This tip may not always be necessary, but it never hurts to have some extra layers and/or a full set of clothes in the car. You may not need them, but depending on the activity and weather you might want a fresh set of clothes to change into prior to driving home. This can especially be true if you’re spending the day at the beach or in a state park kayaking or hiking.

5. Research your Destination Ahead of Time

This is probably the most important tip on the list! There is nothing worse than driving a couple hours to reach your destination only to find out you needed to purchase a ticket in advance or need a permit to hike the trail you picked out. Always do your research ahead of time so your plans aren’t ruined due to poor planning.

6. Fill up your Gas Tank Ahead of Time

As I mentioned early, I like to hit the road and only stop if I absolutely need to. I always try and have my gas tank filled up ahead of time. Most of these trips can be driven with one tank of gas so having it full at the beginning of your day prevents an unnecessary stop later. If my gas tank isn’t full before I leave I will usually stop first thing in the morning.
